New Sequart Book Analyzes Comics Film Adaptations

New Sequart Book Analyzes Comics Film Adaptations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Sequart Organization is proud to announce the publication of Moving Panels: Translating Comics to Film, by Logan Ludwig.

Are comics just movie storyboards that are too expensive to ever actually commit to celluloid? Are movies just comics with added motion? These two media have become more closely tied in recent years (thanks to a bevy of comics adaptations), and they seem naturally related. Both are comprised of visual storytelling techniques that would seem readily compatible, but are they really that similar?

Moving Panels: Translating Comics to Film digs into this issue by analyzing, through careful examination of aesthetics, just how linked and distinct the two media are. By looking at the film and comics versions Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Persepolis, Watchmen, and Sin City, Ludwig dissects just how the two media interact, their respective strengths and weaknesses, and how similar they really are.

The book runs 144 pages and is available in print and on Kindle.

Logan Ludwig is available for interviews, and digital review copies are also available. If interested, please send inquiries to sequart.mike@gmail.com

Fredric Wertham Documentary is Out on DVD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Sequart Organization is proud to announce the DVD release of their Fredric Wertham documentary, Diagram for Delinquents.

In 1950, America was in a state of panic; many felt that juvenile delinquency was destroying the very fabric of society. In 1954, psychiatrist Dr. Fredric Wertham wrote a scathing indictment of comic books called Seduction of the Innocent. Its central premise was that comics were the leading contributing factor to juvenile delinquency. (At the time, 90% of all children were reading comic books.) That same year, Dr. Wertham testified at special hearings on comic books at the Senate Subcommittee to Investigate Juvenile Delinquency in the United States. Comic books were on trial!

Diagram for Delinquents captures the zeitgeist of late 1940s / early 1950s America and investigates how the funny books found themselves on the bonfire. Using expert interviews and never-seen-before historical photographs and films, Diagram goes further than any documentary to explore and understand the controversial figure at the center of this American tale: Fredric Wertham.

The DVD (as well as a digital download version) is now available for purchase at the Sequart Store. For more information on Diagram for Delinquents, and to watch the trailer, you can visit the film's page on Sequart.org.

Here's what the critics are saying:

  • "Diagram does a tremendous job of creating a human and social context for events that are too easily oversimplified, bringing full color (literally and metaphorically) to the usual black-and-white portrayal of Fredric Wertham. It's also incredibly fun to watch, using everything that's good about comic book graphics without ever trivializing the material." — Gerard Jones, author of the Eisner-winning Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters, and the Birth of the Comic Book

  • "For those who might not have thought to look back at the path the medium has had to walk to get where it is today, Diagram for Delinquents is a well-researched and comprehensive history lesson, and should be required viewing for anyone who ever wondered what the fuss was over those silly old monster comics, anyway." — Stephen Andrade, Ain't It Cool News

  • "Diagram is so extensive in its research and its relaying of the facts that it's commendable… A thorough and balanced study of the evolution of comic books, and of Wertham's career." — Chris Evangelista, Cut Print Film

  • "Diagram for Delinquents delivers the most well-rounded approach [to Wertham's story] in recent memory… This movie has an impressive collection of old footage, recordings, and photographs that are put to great use." — Cliff Wheatley, IGN

  • "With commentary by expert comics and pop culture historians like Bart Beaty, Amy Nyberg, Bradford Wright, Carol Tilley and others, viewers get an extremely nuanced view of the comics industry of the time and gain a new perspective on the industry." — Jason Sacks, Comics Bulletin

New Book on Matt Fraction’s CASANOVA from Sequart

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Sequart Organization is proud to announce the release of The Future of Comics, the Future of Men: Matt Fraction's Casanova, authored by Geoff Klock (How to Read Superhero Comics and Why).

Matt Fraction, Gabriel Bá, and Fábio Moon's Casanova is a stylish adventure about a sexy, amoral, universe-hopping, time-traveling spy caught in a war between the militaristic E.M.P.I.R.E. and the decadent and villainous W.A.S.T.E. (led by a bandaged, cackling madman in sunglasses).

The Future of Comics, The Future of Men argues that beneath its pop surface, Casanova is doing more. It challenges the corporate driven comic book production model, in which Disney and Time Warner own all the major superheroes. And it critiques the limited and damaging vision of masculinity that informs so much of modern superhero comics and movies.

With the recent debut of Casanova: Acedia, now is the perfect time to explore the depth of Casanova.

The Future of Comics, The Future of Men features a striking cover by none other than Casanova artist Fábio Moon! It runs 136 pages and is available in print and on Kindle.

Geoff Klock is available for interviews. If interested, please send inquiries to sequart.mike@gmail.com

Sequart is on Patreon

Hello,

Sequart Organization has launched a Patreon fundraising campaign, and we humbly ask that you share this information with your comics and pop culture loving friends.

Comics and popular culture get more respect today than ever before. Yet they still lack a culture of smart criticism, and few are taking them seriously as legitimate forms of art.

Sequart Organization has been fighting this battle for almost two decades. And we're making a lot of progress.

Through a website with daily content, over twenty books in print, and six documentary films, Sequart Organization does everything it can to educate, stir thought, and be accessible to a general audience. We want you to be able to show us to your friends and say, "See? This is why comics and popular culture matter. These media can be every bit as deep as Shakespeare or anything else."

Running a website and a book line and a movie studio takes a huge amount of time and money. Google ads don't pay the bills, and 2000-word articles on comics / pop culture (that take hours or even days to write) can't compete for traffic with 200-word blurbs on movie gossip or celebrity wardrobe malfunctions.

We need to pay our editors and writers if we're going to grow. If you go to Patreon and make a donation, your contribution will help make us independent. It will help free us to focus on growing Sequart. It will allow us to expand our offerings online. And it will also help compensate our website editors and writers.

Those of you who have followed Sequart know how much we've grown over the years. We want to keep growing. We have tons of cool ideas, but we're limited by time and money. We all still have day jobs. Book and movie production involves irregular expenses, and it can be scary when the bills happen to clump together. Somehow, we've managed. But just barely. What we're trying to do with this Patreon campaign is just to make things a little easier. Having a monthly income through Patreon could really help smooth things out, lower our stress, and let us focus on making the website better and producing more books and movies.

We've come up with some cool rewards for our patrons, and, with your help, we're excited to see what this fundraising platform can help Sequart accomplish.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for helping us to dig deeper into comics and pop culture analysis.

Happy New Year!

Here's what the critics are already saying:

  • "Entertaining, informative, and inspiring. Plant[s] a flag in the ground to let everyone know that things are, thankfully, changing. The real success of the film is not simply describing or complaining about the problem, but addressing it head on and reinforcing the dedication with which they view comics; that comics are worth fighting this battle for. Drips with passion for the comic book medium and for the fight against the sad realities that have plagued women in the industry for decades." — Cliff Wheatley, IGN

  • "I can't stress enough how important it is that you see this film, and more than that, that you take its message with you after the credits roll. She Makes Comics lets any woman watching know that she too is accepted, that she is welcome here. A moving, poignant film that reveals a hidden history of comics… 10/10." — Timothy Merritt, Coming Up Comics

  • "An uplifting and informative celebration of women in comics." — Hugh Armitage, Digital Spy

  • "I was so inspired and impressed by all of those amazing women." — Shona O'Flaherty, Is It A Bicycle?

  • "It's still blowing my mind… Mesmerizing." — Verushka Byrow, Pop.Edit.Lit

  • "A true celebration of the medium. I watched this with my girlfriend, also a comic book fan, and we were high-fiving throughout! We need more movies like She Makes Comics!" — Clay N. Ferno, Forces of Geek
